A Message from
our Co-Presidents
Dear Serrans,
As summer comes to a close, and we head into fall, there is a lot happening at Serra and so much to be grateful for!
In this issue of The Mission Bell, we look back at a busy summer with recaps of the Nun Run, Seminarian Send-Off, Adopt-a-Seminarian, and our recent Mass for Shut-Ins appreciation and training gathering. We also share highlights from our August meetings, including a fun-filled and informative Always Forward Members Day and a wonderful program with our chaplain, Fr. Harry Buse.
As the Archdiocesan seminarians begin another year of formation, please continue to keep them in your prayers and find small ways to let them know Serra is behind them, particularly staying in touch with your Adopt-a-Seminarian.
Looking ahead, we have great speakers joining us on September 14 and September 28 (keep reading to see who will be joining us), Sundae Sunday is at the end of the month, in October is the Pro-Sanctity Mother-Daughter Tea, and in November we will gather for the annual Mass of Remembrance.

Seminarian Send-Off Mass and Picnic

On Sunday, August 2, the Serra Club of Omaha hosted the Archdiocese of Omaha Seminarian Send-Off Mass and Picnic at St. Patrick's Parish in Elkhorn. Archbishop Michael McGovern and Archbishop Emeritus George Lucas both joined us, along with numerous priests from across the Archdiocese who con-celebrated the Mass and stayed for the picnic. We are grateful to report 100 percent attendance from our seminarians - every one of our men was there. More than thirty seminarian parents came to send their sons off, and in all we served over 260 people that afternoon.
More than twenty Serrans volunteered to make the day happen, from setup and serving to cleanup. Michele Pohlman served as Master of Ceremonies and did a wonderful job keeping the afternoon moving and the crowd engaged. Those in attendance were well taken care of by the Serrans and enjoyed the afternoon hearing from the seminarians and enjoying a meal together.
One of the highlights was hearing from the seminarians themselves. Each man shared what he had done over the summer and spoke about how that experience shaped his faith and his path toward the priesthood. Hearing them describe their formation in their own words is a reminder of exactly why this club exists.
Monday, August 10th Club Meeting
Always Forward Members' Day
On Monday, August 10th, Serra Club of Omaha members were treated to a meeting dedicated to them.
Before the luncheon, most members took the opportunity to update their club roster photos, taken by Maddie Stodgill, daughter of Serran Deb Jarosik.

Tom and Mary Ruth Jensen were officially installed as members.
Michala Jacobsen, VP Membership, shared how members can help grow our club and support our mission.
She explained the new member recruitment and orientation process and had all members fill out a "Count On Me" form to indicate those club programs they are interested in being involved in. (There is a link to the form in this newsletter for your convenience if you were not able to complete one.)
Mike Knier, Co-President, gave a recap of the Serra International Convention in July and shared with members the change to Serra's Constitution and Bylaws which was approved by delegates at the convention. Going forward, the purpose and objective of Serra International will now include encouraging and affirming vocations, not only to the Ministerial Priesthood and Consecrated Religious Life, but also to the ministry of the Permanent Diaconate in the Catholic Church.
Adam Herink, VP Vocations Recruitment, spoke about the Adopt-a-Seminarian program and members were able to see the current list of seminarians and sign up to be an adoptive Serran.
Lynn Weist, VP Programs, distributed a survey to get feedback on past speakers as well as ideas for future ones.

At the Monday meeting on August 28, the Serra Club of Omaha prayed for seminarian Andrew Nigro. Our Club prays one decade of the rosary for a different seminarian at the first meeting of each month.
Andrew was able to attend with his parents, Serrans Scott and Estelle Nigro, along with their guest and good friend Jacob Raemakers, who is discerning a vocation to the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in the Bronx.
Before the prayer, Andrew came up and explained what “Configuration” means and what he is looking forward to this year.

Michala Jacobsen and Tim O’Neill led the Rosary decade from the Joyful Mysteries- the Annunciation. Andrew is from St. Geralds in Ralston and begins his second Configuration year at St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, MN. God willing, he will be ordained in 2029.

He recalled attending Mass with only his mother before he was old enough for school - an experience that stood out because, in a large family, time alone with her was rare.
During that Mass, he told her, “I want to be like him,” pointing to the priest.
The thought of priesthood stayed with him as he grew up and entered seminary after high school. Seven men were ordained in his class of 1977. All but one remain priests. He remembered teaching eighth-grade Religion at St. Columbkille, though he admitted he had no formal training and teaching was not his favorite assignment.

He acknowledged the changes in the Church and the priesthood over the past 50 years. Growing up, more than half of his teachers were priests or Sisters, and even very small parishes often had two priests. When he was first ordained, few lay people were involved in parish ministries. Today, by contrast, he said, St. Patrick’s in Elkhorn has 25 paid parish staff members, and there are many more meetings. He described the development of Parish Leadership Teams as a valuable resource for pastors, especially those who find delegation difficult.
Fr. Harry asked, “What is the profile of a good pastor?” He has noticed that expectations have changed and that priests are often judged more by their personality traits. Parishioners can be critical when priests do not meet those expectations. Serra Club of Omaha Contributes
to the Annual Nun Run

Not to be confused to with a 10K race, the Nun Run is actually a ride in a touring bus for young women discerning religious vocations in the Omaha Archdiocese. More like a pilgrimage, participants traveled across Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota, making a “run” of visits to communities of religious women before returning home.
The Nun Run began in 2009, when Vicki Herout and Paula Bastian led the first group in a desire to help young women move their discernment from imagination to reality by meeting sisters in person. This year’s Nun Run was the longest yet: four days in late July taking the 18 participants to visits at five different religious communities.
Vicki and Paula are members of the Consecrated Life Team, which assists Fr. Scott Schilmoeller in the Vocations Office when inquiries are received from young women discerning a vocation.
The Serra Club of Omaha joined other Nun Run sponsors with a $500 donation.

Training Updates and Appreciation for the Mass For Shut-Ins Volunteers

The Mass For Shut-Ins (MFSI) is a ministry sponsored by our Club of which we can be proud. It was started in February, 1964 and has been broadcast every Sunday since for 62 years. In February, 2027 it will be 63 years this ministry has been provided to an estimated more than 10,000 viewers every weekend. Every Mass is an important part of our Mission for promoting the vocations and our personal holiness.
Sometimes it takes a village to get things done and that is true of the Mass for Shut-Ins. An appreciation and training session was held Thursday, August 20th at the German American Society building.
Thirty Serrans who are involved in the MFSI were in attendance to learn the current information and receive updates to make their participation in the MFSI easier and better informed.
Information included arrival time, altar set up, tips for attire, how to be a better lector or commentator, and even parking information due to the construction challenges in the Blackstone area.

We were thankful our Chaplain, Fr. Buse opened and closed our meeting with prayer and offered his comments about his experience with the MFSI.

Vicki will also explain the origins of the Praying for Our Priests booklet, created by Msgr. Peter Dunne and herself, and used by many Serrans as a primary prayer resource for the Seven Serrans and Adopt a Seminarian programs.
We also will hear Steve and Marguerite Hotovy, the parents of Brother Paul Hotovy. Brother Paul entered the order, Salesians of Don Bosco, in 2018. Br. Paul is currently in formation at Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, and living nearby in community with other Salesians.

“From Africa to Omaha”
We invite you to join us at our September 28th meeting, where we have the privilege of hosting Father Vincent Sunguti to share his experiences as a priest both in Africa and Nebraska.
Born and raised in western Kenya in a large farming family of nine children, he has experienced both joy and loss in family life, having lost two siblings and his father.
Fr. Vincent was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Eldoret, Kenya, on July 28, 2001, and will celebrate 25 years of priesthood this year.

In 2011, Fr. Vincent came to Omaha to continue his studies at Creighton University. Since then, he has served as associate pastor at St. Mary Magdalene and St. Margaret Mary. He served as pastor of St. Joseph in Wisner and Holy Cross in Beemer. Fr. Vincent also served as associate pastor at St. Patrick and St. Charles Borromeo in Gretna, while also serving as chaplain at Skutt Catholic High School, before being named Pastor of St. Gerald in Ralston.

It has become a tradition to host a “Sundae Sunday” at the St. John Vianney Retirement Center near 73rd and Center on Priesthood Sunday, a day to show appreciation as designated by the USCCB.
Our special guest this year will be Fr. Logan Hepp. Fr. Hepp spoke to our club last Spring and gave us his reflections on his first year of priesthood. He will make a similar presentation to priests who have served, collectively, hundreds of years.
Serrans answered the call, and we have plenty of help to meet, greet, welcome, serve, and chat with the priests who attend.
It’s a simple event, but one the priests enjoy and it’s a great way to show them Serra’s appreciation for their years of service to our Church.

For years our Serra Club has proudly commemorated deceased Serrans and family members, along with departed Clergy from the Archdiocese by celebrating an annual Mass of Remembrance during the month of November.
This year our Mass will be held on Monday, November 9th at St. Roberts Church at 120th and Pacific, and it will coincide with the parish’s regularly scheduled 5:30 p.m. Mass. Our Chaplain, Fr. Harry Buse, will be the presiding celebrant.
Immediately following Mass, we will host a reception at the parish. Beverages, wine, and heavy hors d’oeuvres will be catered by Serran Ted Thomsen with Pleasure Your Pallet Catering.
In keeping our honored tradition, we look forward to having family members of our deceased Serrans and Clergy who have passed away since last year’s Mass join us.
We will be asking for volunteers to help with the Mass as greeters, lectors, and musicians as well as “hosts” for our visiting guests. If you are interested in helping, please reach out to either Casey Kennelly (dan.casey.kennelly@gmail.com) or Dale Kreher (kreherfamily@gmail.com) who are planning this year’s celebration.

Focuses on Women’s Vocations

The Vocations Office and Consecrated Life Team have asked the Serra Club of Omaha to assist with the Mother-Daughter Vocations Tea at the ProSanctity Retreat Center in Elkhorn on Saturday, October 10, from 3–5 p.m.
The Vocations Tea is part of a three-day series of activities with visiting Religious Sisters from nine different orders during the weekend of October 9–11.

Events include Friday morning school visits for Religious Sisters at selected archdiocesan schools, Saturday’s Vocations Tea for middle school girls and their mothers, and Sunday’s High School and College Discernment Event at the JPII Newman Center. The Religious Sisters and Consecrated Women were invited from communities in the Midwest including Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Kansas, and Texas.
The Saturday Mother-Daughter Vocations Tea is hosted by the Apostolic Oblates, the Omaha Archdioceses Vocations Office, and the Consecrated Life Team. Mothers and their middle school daughters will join Religious Sisters and Consecrated Women to mingle, listen to talks, and share in a craft activity. Girls need opportunities to encounter religious life before they can consider a call to it, and time with the Sisters provides that experience.
Volunteers are needed by 1:30 p.m. to help set up, serve during the tea, and clean up afterward. If you can help with any part of the event, please contact Lynn Weist at Lweist@cox.net.

Adopt-a-Seminarian:
Our Seminarians are Back to School

Our seminarians are back at school, and the Serra Club of Omaha's Adopt-a-Seminarian program is underway for another year. The Archdiocese of Omaha has 25 men in formation this year, including eight new seminarians.
Adopt-a-Seminarian is one of the most personal things our club does. Rather than supporting vocations from a distance, the program pairs Serrans directly with an individual seminarian to pray for him, write to him, and walk alongside him through his years of formation. That personal connection is what makes the program meaningful - both for our members and for the men themselves.
Lynn Weist has done a great job hosting a sign-up table at our last two luncheon meetings on August 10 and August 24, giving members the chance to choose a seminarian and commit to supporting him this year. The response has been overwhelming, and every one of our 25 seminarians now has at least one Serran praying for him.
There is always room for more. If you were unable to attend either August meeting, or if you would like to add a second seminarian, we would be glad to have you.

That personal connection is what makes the program meaningful - both for our members and for the men themselves.
Lynn Weist has done a great job hosting a sign-up table at our last two luncheon meetings on August 10 and August 24, giving members the chance to choose a seminarian and commit to supporting him this year. The response has been overwhelming, and every one of our 25 seminarians now has at least one Serran praying for him.
There is always room for more. If you were unable to attend either August meeting, or if you would like to add a second seminarian, we would be glad to have you.
